September is Self-Care Awareness Month, and our team at Avon Place wanted to share a reminder of how important self-care is. Self-care varies between each individual, ranging from physical, social, and mental activities. Our staff comes up with creative ways to include self-care in our daily lives, especially through the activities we do. The National Institute of Mental Health defines self-care as taking time to do things that improve both physical and mental health in order to live well.
Our activities department always makes sure our residents look and feel their best. Examples of how our activities include self-care are through nail spas, facials, and spa days for those who enjoy pampering, a walking club for those who enjoy exercise, family game nights and group crafts for social health, and brain games, journaling, 1:1 visits, and trivia for mental health. We also have monthly outings to restaurants, stores, sports games, and more, for our residents to enjoy the community.
Self-care can improve feelings in different areas of life, including health, careers, and relationships. Listed here are some words of wisdom that our residents came up with in an activity that can tie in to self-care: check out the full list of advice located at the front desk!
